Ray MartinRay Martin knows what being a champion is all about. He is a member of an elite group of coaches who can say they lead an NCAA Championship team to victory. As an Assistant Coach, he was by Jimmy Valvano’s side when the North Carolina State “Cinderella Team” won the National Championship in 1983. After leaving North Carolina State, he worked as an assistant and head coach at Harvard, Southern Methodist University, the University of Tennessee, and Long Island University. Martin currently is an assistant coach at North Carolina Central University.  NBA professionals Allan Houston, Spud Webb, Sidney Lowe, Wally Szczerbiack, Nate McMillian, Vinny Del Negro, Thurl Bailey and Tom Gugliotta all crossed Martin’s paths as a college recruiter. His skill as a recruiter of great talent emanates from his own experience and commitment to the game.
This commitment began in Long Island City, Queens, N.Y., where  Martin was an All-American on the hardwood at St. John's Preparatory High School and was voted as the Best High School Basketball Player in New York City. Martin went on to play four years of basketball at Notre Dame under head coach Digger Phelps, starting at point guard and earning the honor of team captain as a senior for the Fighting Irish. He was a college teammate of NBA standout Adrian Dantley and a member of the Notre Dame team that ended UCLA's 88-game winning streak on Jan. 19, 1974.
Martin and his wife Valerie have four children - Nina, Alexis, Ashley and Anthony, and two grandchildren.
